The Public Theater has announced its lineup for this year’s Shakespeare in the Park festival and it features a star turn by Academy Award Nominee Anne Hathaway as she makes her Public Theater debut playing Viola, one of the canon’s most charming heroines. Taking charge of this time-honored story of cross-dressing and mistaken identity, all in the name of love, is Tony Award winning Director Daniel Sullivan.

TWELFTH NIGHT
By WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
Directed by DANIEL SULLIVAN

JUNE 9 – JULY 12

The second feature of summer 2009 features JoAnne Akalaitis returning to The Public Theater to present Greek tragedy as it was always meant to be seen – in the open air of the city. This visionary interpretation, featuring a lush choral score by Philip Glass, re-imagines the classic story about what happens when a government attempts to outlaw desire.

THE BACCHAE
By EURIPIDES
Directed by JOANNE AKALAITIS
Music by PHILIP GLASS
Translated by NICHOLAS RUDALL

AUGUST 11 – SEPTEMBER 6

ABOUT

For over 50 years, The Public has been proud to bring free performances to over 100,000 people each summer at the Delacorte Theater in Central Park. This long-standing tradition has joined esteemed artists with audiences from all over the world to celebrate Shakespeare and other classic works. Free tickets are available both in person and online to the general public. Outreach initiatives, student programs, and borough ticket distribution help bring these productions to a broad cross-section of the community.

Recent productions include HAIR: THE AMERICAN TRIBAL LOVE-ROCK MUSICAL; HAMLET; A MIDSUMMER NIGHTS DREAM; ROMEO AND JULIET; MOTHER COURAGE AND HER CHILDREN; MACBETH; AS YOU LIKE IT; TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA; MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING; and HENRY V.
